A friendly running club welcome to all abilities

At Saint Edmund Pacers, we are dedicated to fostering a love for competitive and cooperative running. Our mission is to bring individuals from diverse backgrounds together, encouraging them to move in a positive direction. With a focus on family-oriented values, happiness, health, and enthusiasm, our club provides a supportive environment where members can run, volunteer, socialise, and contribute to our community and charitable organisations.

While running can be challenging, the benefits it offers for health and well-being are significant. Running alongside others enhances enjoyment and greatly increases the likelihood of maintaining a consistent running routine. Whether you are runner that is looking to improve, or someone who is yet to lace up their running shoes, we are committed to fuelling our members’ passion for running through high-quality coaching, building strong friendships, providing unwavering encouragement, and helping individuals fulfil their potential, regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, pace, or experience. Our shared experiences allow us to learn and grow together, leaving no runner behind.

If you have any queries please contact our Membership Secretary, at membership@pacers.org.uk. This year due to all the economic uncertainty we are offering reduced membership for anyone suffering financially. The aim of the club is to get people running together for health and wellbeing and we don’t want any financial issues to be a barrier to this so please do get in touch.

Senior training

As a club we have several different training opportunities going on throughout the week that you can dip in and out of as frequently as you like. Below are descriptions of the main ones. Please note that the track training is optional, to help cover the hire of the track we request a £6 a month standing order in addition to membership to attend the track sessions.

Mondays – Track: Low key / active recovery session

18:30, Abbeycroft Leisure Centre

Ideal for brand new and less experienced runners looking to start progressing their running in a friendly welcoming group environment. Also active recovery from a weekend long run for more experienced runners. You are welcome to warm up on the track beforehand.

Wednesdays – Track: aerobic session

18:30, Abbeycroft Leisure Centre

Advanced multi-paced aerobic interval sessions. Periodised through the year to prepare for club targets, these are usually fairly high volume, tougher sessions for those looking to get fitter. But you don’t have to do the whole session and being time based intervals these are suitable for all. You are welcome to warm up on the track beforehand, but be mindful of the juniors who will be training on the inner lanes.

Sundays – Long runs

09:00, Various start locations around Bury

This is organised by our Whatsapp groups (see Senior Training for more information) so you can run with similar speed runners, varying in distances but usually roughly 10miles.

Sundays – Cross country training

09:00, Nowton Park

Held in the Winter only, varied sessions of efforts and hills to prepare for Suffolk Winter league.

In addition to these there are also other groups runs that are organised via the different WhatsApp chats that we have setup based, organised by 5k times.

Please note as a club we subscribe to the UKA Codes of conduct which should be adhered to at all times.

WHERE AND WHEN DO WE MEET?

Training can vary where and when it takes place, however it is usually at the track at Abbeycroft Leisure in Bury St Edmunds.Abbeycroft Leisure
Beetons Way
Bury St Edmunds
IP33 3TT

Exact details of time and location for each session can be found on our Senior Training Schedule, or via the main Pacers’s WhatsApp group.

Please arrive with time to get ready and warm up before each session.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR AND BRING?

You need to wear clothes that you can run in, feel comfortable, and are weather appropriate. Athletes will need adequate water all year round, and footwear appropriate to use on both grass and track depending on the session; there is no requirement to buy specialist track or racing shoes.

What about races?

The club actively encourages all our members to race, however it is not a requirement nor anything we would pressurise people into doing should they not wish to.

There are numerous races held across the year and around the country/world. Members can take part in any races they wish, with the added benefit of sometimes a group of other members forming and making it a fun social event.

During the summer (May, June, July) the club takes part in the “Friday 5 Series” which is made up of six races, including our own event held in Nowton Park. For more details please see Friday 5 Series info.

The club also enjoys entering teams for the UK’s only ‘Ekiden Relay’ organised by Ipswich Jaffa Running Club in July. This is a lovely club day out with Pacers entering as many Senior and Junior teams as we can muster.

During the winter (October – March) the club’s key focus is the Suffolk Winter League Cross Country series. There are six races, one of which is hosted by Pacers at Pakenham.

There are also a number others that we organise as a club, information about these available in the main menu.

We also hold inner-club competitions for fun. These vary from track events, to championships: information about these can also be found in the main menu.
