Kedington 5k 13th June 2009
We at Haverhill Running Club are going to be organising a 5K run at Kedington on the 13th June. This is going to be run on the same course we used for a inter-club event last summer and (unusually) will be on a Saturday as we will run it in collaboration with the Kedington Meadowlark which is a Fete held mid June every year. I have attached a copy of an entry form and would be very grateful if you could make your members aware of the race, though we will make an effort to promote this at local events as well. Thank you very much and best wishes

So don’t forget, as the summer season approaches and road races abound, fill in your application forms (found on the website) and you’ll get a certificate in return.

Dave Overman featuring in The London Marathon for Great Ormond Street Hospital
You may have recently seen Dave in the Bury Free Press. If you want to know how you can help to donate to this cause details are below from Dave. Note Dave didn't ask for this to appear but it was an inspiring article in the BFP and I thought it deserved to be added in the news page
Dear All
Please let me apologise for sending you this but you have come up in my email list of people that have been sent emails either by me or copied into ones that I have been sent.
If you do not wish to contribute I understand and appreciate you reading this far.
As some of you may know I have run a few marathons before and last year I managed to secure a place in the London Marathon.
As it was a ballot place I decided that it would be of benefit if I could raise some money for a charity that does a lot of good work for people in general.
Similarly you may be aware of Sue Standring in our office, her daughter Daniella is presently being ‘stretched’ by Great Ormond Street so that her left leg is the same length as her right one.
Whilst she is already taller than me I have to concede that she does deserve to have both legs the same length.
The reason she was in the position and the details surrounding her operation are contained in the article that appeared in the Bury Free Press a couple of weeks ago. You can read this by clicking on the web link below.
http://www.buryfreepress.co.uk/news/Courageous-Daniella-spurs-on-David.5066098.jp
The thing they missed was that if you wish to sponsor me and raise money for a very worthwhile cause please go to www.justgiving.com/davidoverman
All contributions will be gratefully accepted and if you have any spare trainers for me that would be great as well (Daniella threw mine away after the photo shoot)
Thanks for reading this and for any support you can spare.
Best wishes
Dave

Bury 5 - Farm Track
Club members should refrain from training on the farm track used for the Bury 5. As you are aware we only have permission to use the farm on race night only.
Rod Allard reports that on calling to see the farmer today ( To get permission for this year ) which was confirmed as o.k. I was asked to stop runners using the track for training. Apparently, not only are people training on the farm track but they are also giving abuse to the person who tried to stop them! They also said it was alright because they were Bury Pacers!
Your cooperation on this much appreciated.

National Cross Country League Final
A trip to Halifax?
The Sunday League National Cross Country Final will be staged at Halifax in Yorkshire on Sunday, April 19. We are invited to attend, having won the Suffolk Winter League title, to race against all the other regional winners from up and down the country. Although it is a long journey, of about three-and-a-half-hours, it would certainly be worth sending a squad to run in such a prestigious final. We need seven men and three ladies to score, but the more the merrier. It is a week before the London Marathon, so would be an ideal “warm-up” for the big day. Please put this date in your diary and contact Carl Marston on 07789 635203 if you would like to run. If we get enough people interested, then we would travel up on the day (the race does not start until 12.30pm), either in a convoy of cars or perhaps a coach. |

The Whole Hog Run 1st November 2009
Please forgive the unsolicited email but I am asking local sporting organisations if they would be interested in taking part in the “Whole Hog” in November in aid of the Suffolk Disability Charity Optua. If you have people already interested in taking part that have not yet registered we get a discount for group charity registration and are very close to getting enough teams to qualify for 10% off the registration fee. We have no minimum fundraising targets at all, please see details below.
Please would you be so kind as to ask your members if anyone would be interested as outlined below.
Would you like to get wet and muddy in aid of Optua?
Optua is putting together teams of 3 people to enter the adventure challenge race called “The Whole Hog” on Sunday 1st November at Rendlesham Forest. The Whole Hog is a 7 mile wet and muddy running (and walking) race with an adventure assault course thrown in for good measure. The terrain is the beautiful and hilly area of Rendlesham Forest near Wantisden. Last year we had two teams who got very muddy for us and we hope to have many more this year. Last year our fastest (and experienced) runner did the course in one hour and the rest in just over 2 hours.
Optua is a Suffolk Disability Charity providing local services including Homecare, Leisure Activities, Transport, Advice and support for people with Acquired Brain Injury; this can include car accidents, strokes and illness causing brain injury. We also have a Disability Sports Academy encouraging participation in Disability Sports leading up to the 2012 Para-olympics. Further information about our services can be seen at www.optua.org.uk
If you are interested in running in aid of Optua we offer a great support package to help you with the event including an online fundraising page, Optua team t-shirts and staff at the event. We are also planning to enter at least two staff teams this year.
We do not set any minimums for fundraising but we do have a reward package for the best fundraisers. All teams that raise over £300 we will refund £40 towards the team entry fee expenses and teams raising over £500 we will refund the whole team entry fee. There is also a prize for the team that raises the most money for Optua. All teams running for Optua automatically receive and pass on a 10% discount on the entry fees once we have 8 or more teams (for 17 teams we would pass on the 15% discount). Please contact Lisa from our fundraising team for more information and for discounted rate registration forms on lisa.butler@optua.org.uk or 01473 836745.
For photographs of the event last year and for race report information the website for the Whole Hog can be found at http://www.acefundraising.co.uk/wholehog_1.htm - there may have been lots of mud but there were also lots of smiles. Last year’s event raised money towards a garden in Stowmarket for two supported housing schemes and a library of resources to assist with rehabilitation and learning to communication after brain injury.
Our thanks go to all the runners who supported us last year and those who have already agreed to run again this year.
Lisa Butler
Fundraising Officer, Optua

Pacers win the Suffolk Winter League 2008-9
Report from Carl Marston
It couldn't have been any closer, but it has been confirmed that Saint Edmund Pacers have won
the Suffolk Winter League title - not by the number of points scored,
but on count-back! We had gone into the final race at Haughley Park
trailing Stowmarket by 69 points, but we duly won that race by - you've
guessed it - 69 points! That meant both we and Stowmarket finished on
5,260 points after all six races. Suffolk County
AA Chairman Joe Mower, has confirmed that the Pacers will be awarded
the title because they had finished ahead of the Striders in four of
the six races.
Great to see so many Pacers at Haughley Park for the final Suffolk
Winter League meeting of the season. We had stacks of juniors, and
probably a record number of seniors. Perhaps we should think about
entering a team for the national final? (if they still stage one)
Well done to everyone this is absolutely brillant and a credit to every one who took part or helped out!
Individual results are still awaited but will be included on the xc page when known. |

Suffolk County Championships
Congratulations to all those who ran for the club in cross country
events over the weekend. We had an excellent turn-out at the Suffolk
Championships at Haughley Park, with 39 members taking part in the
various races. The juniors were out in force, with the under-13 girls
winning the team section, while our senior women won the team award
and our men were a close second. The highlights included a win for
Jemma Clarry in the under-20 women's race, while there were top five
finishes for Adam Seymour, Jessica Gooderham, Alice Maguire, Christine
Anthony, Maureen McCarthy, Peter Barker and Peter Golding. We also had
a good turn-out at the latest race in the Ryston Series, at Shouldham
Warren.

Club Standards
See below from Sarah Golding - hopefully most of you will have seen that Sarah relaunched the Club Standards last year. Unfortunately I have to report a big fat zilch as there has been no response from any member to this initiative.
I want to ask every member to consider the club standards - indeed make it a new years resoloution or one of your goals for this year to take part in the club standards.
If there is something that we haven't thought of or you have an idea to encourage the development of the club standards lets have your thoughts. I have added a thread to the clubs new Yahoo message board so please give your views on what or how we can develop the Club Standards.
We are very glad to re-introduce the club standards scheme which many clubs all over the country already run.
The Pacers Club Standards are intended to motivate and encourage all members by giving them age graded targets to work towards regardless of individual ability at 5km, 5 miles, 10km, 10 miles, half marathon, 15 miles, 20 miles and marathon. Achievements will be rewarded by a certificate after verification by the Club Standards Secretary.
We will also be introducing a similar scheme for our junior members with distances ranging from 400m to 2 Miles for the under 13s and 15s and 400m to 5Miles for the under 17s. Again, achievements will be rewarded by certificate.
Application forms for Club Standards can be found on this page as a download. Once completed, all seniors’ forms should be forwarded to the Club Standards Secretary and the juniors’ forms to Terry Rigby. All applications should be submitted together with confirmation of timings, i.e. race results sheet or newspaper clippings. Juniors are also able to submit timings provided by their club coach.
Standards will be recognised from 01 July 2008 onwards; no retrospective results will be eligible for verification.
Updates on who has achieved standards will be printed in each edition of The Pace, so come on guys, get those applications rolling in.
Happy running!

The Yahoo Group was requested by members at the last AGM as a perceived way of improving communication between members so everyone has an opporunity of being involved in races and sharing general information securely on a closed message board( Only members can belong ).
The Yahoo Group will only really work if a large number of club members join so please consider doing so below.

Kili Marathon
http://eastafricanadventure.com/trips/kili_marathon1.html
Tom from East African Adventure.com was in touch again and provided an interesting account of a trek up Kilamanjaro. As someone who has been fortunate enough to do this in 2000 I can say it was a trip of a life time and a fantastic experience. The 1st Kili marathon is next March but you may want to have a read about the Kilamanjaro Experience here

Sponsored Run at RSPB Lakenheath Fen nature reserve
On Sunday February 8 2009, the RSPB is offering a unique opportunity to visit a local nature reserve in a different way. Inspired by the regional ‘Get Fit for Wildlife’ initiative, staff and volunteers from across the region will be running around Lakenheath Fen nature reserve to raise money for wildlife.
There will be three courses of different lengths to choose from: a 10 km (6.2 miles), 5 km (3.1 miles) and 2 km (1.2 miles) circuit. These will be on the general visitor trails and should offer good views of the reserve. You can run, jog, walk with friends and family or even with your binoculars. There will be a sightings board at the finish line for ‘runners’ to record what they have seen on their way around too. Depending on weather conditions parts of the course may be quite wet and muddy, with some uneven ground. The courses will be well signposted and there will be marshals positioned at intervals around the track.
On the day, registration will begin at 10.30 am at the visitor centre and the races will start at 11 am. All courses will start in the car park. After completing the run, you will be presented with a certificate and goodie bag. Refreshments will be available in the visitor centre afterwards. Please pass this information onto any of your members that might be interested in taking part.
The money raised will go directly to fund the RSPB’s conservation work in this region - working not just for birds but all wildlife and tackling the problems that threaten our environment.
If you require any further information or a sponsorship form, please do not hesitate to contact me, Rebecca Pitman, on 01842 863400 or email rebecca.pitman@rspb.org.uk
Best wishes

Calderdale Relay
I have pulled us out of the Calderdale Relay as I have not managed to get enough people involved due to injuries etc.
This does look like an excellent event which I will try and spend some more time sorting out for 2009 – but after running out on Saddleworth Moor last week I now realise that we need to look at our preparation in far more detail. I will get a note out in the Spring and discuss with interested runners during the summer.

Hereward Relay 2008
From Dave ........... Thanks for taking part in our most successful team event so far.
Five teams indeed!
Well done for all the runners that took part in torrid conditions, particularly the first couple of legs.
The interim results put us in fourth for both men and ladies. Full results should be available tomorrow on the Hereward web site.
In addition Kevin Murphy was fastest Male for the second leg and Dave and Angie won the fourth leg in their respective vets class (only one vet across all age categories)
Thanks to Pete Golding who helped on the day ferry people about and motivate all of our teams.
Special thanks to Martin and Stephen who ran their first relay whilst I have been in charge.
It is good to get new blood into the teams and without their involvement others would not have been able to run.
It was also good to see that a lot of the team managed to follow the race through to the conclusion despite the awful conditions, especially as a hot bath would have been far more appealing!
Finally a birthday wish to Pat who turned up to run the first leg on her birthday. Many happy returns and I hope the rest of the day was warmer J

The Kilamanjaro Marathon
My name is Tom Sutton and along with my Dad we run East African Adventure.
We specialise in trekking and walking holidays in Tanzania and Kenya,
climbing Kilimanjaro, Mt Kenya and Mt meru, and lower level walks in other
areas of African wilderness (including safari's).
I am a keen runner, and as such one of our newest itineraries is for the
Kilimanjaro Marathon.
On March the 1st 2009 is the 7th official running of the event, which last
year attracted roughly 1,000 competitors to the full and half marathon
distances from East Africa and all over the world. From Thursday the 26th
February - Tuesday 3rd March we are running the first organised trip from
the UK to take part in this unique marathon which is held at the bottom
(phew!) of one of the most iconic mountains in the world, experiencing
local sights and culture, via coffee and banana plantations!
Our carefully designed itineray includes enough time to relax beforehand,
a Game drive with canoeing experience in Arusha National Park to spot some
of the african wildlife and of course entry to the Kilimanjaro Marathon/
Half Marathon, all the while staying in one of the most comfortable lodges
in the area.

Suffolk Winter League - Nowton Park 26th October 2008
Saint Edmund Pacers are hosting the first race in the Suffolk Winter League this Sunday. The race starts at 11am in Nowton Park. Please feel free to just turn and up run - there is no charge for running - but the club could do with some help in the pre-race organisation. We especially need car park attendants to direct cars into South Lee School and then Nowton Park before the race. Also, we will need a few marshals to help during the race, on the course and at the finish area. Anyone who can help on the day, please come along to Nowton Park early on Sunday morning (around 9-9.30am). For more information before the day of the event, please contact cross country manager Carl Marston (07789 635203) - Carl will not be contactable on race-day. |

The Hereward Relay 23rd November 2008
Last year we managed to get three teams running after being decimated by Flu.
This is a great event which all members can run as there are legs from six to eleven miles and they are all enjoyable runs in themselves but combined make a friendly and competitive club relay event for all runners.
It would be great to get a few more teams this year as it makes the logistics a lot easier for moving runners from end to end before and after their run.
I’ll ask Rod to get the board up at the club so you can add your name to that or send me an email/ text to confirm your place.
After last year I do not think anyone will be left out if you put your names down.
Starting at 9 am from Peterborough Cathedral and following the Hereward Way for 38.4 miles to Ely Cathedral, crossing over bridleways, fields, bridges and tracks.
Teams of 4 runners.
Stage 1 PETERBOROUGH . 6.1 miles of river bank, farm drove & public road.
Stage Two WHITTLESEY. 11.6 miles of ever-changing terrain.
Stage Three MARCH. 10.3 miles incorporating some of the best agricultural land in the country.
Stage Four WELNEY . 9.6 miles of road, track and possible mud.
Trophies to:- First Three Teams and First Two Ladies Teams.
Individual prizes to 1st Man: 1st Vet Man: 1st Lady: 1st Vet Lady: in each stage. Horsebrass to all finishers.
All members welcome to take part. We want to take as many teams as possible to this event. This is a team relay event so entry is paid by the club.

Parkinson's Disease Society team for the Great Eastern Run,
As runners, you and your club members know what it’s like to push your body to its limits and to rely on your will-power and determination to keep going when your body wants to stop. Imagine having to exercise that level of will-power just to get up from a chair or to walk across a room. Imagine not being in control of your body, being unable to run or even to take a step.
Today, 27 people in the UK will be diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a progressive neurological condition affecting a person’s ability to control their movements. Living with Parkinson’s is extremely challenging. From initial diagnosis, through its unpredictable progression, people with Parkinson’s need accurate advice and information and an extensive range of health and social care to help them to manage their symptoms and maintain their quality of life.
Your club members could help us to take a step closer to providing people with Parkinson's across Eastern England with the essential care and support that they need – to help them to stay in control.
Ask your fellow club members to join the Parkinson's Disease Society team for the Great Eastern Run, which takes place in Peterborough on Sunday 12th October. We’ll provide a free place in return for a commitment to raise a minimum of £125 in sponsorship to help people with Parkinson's. The Run is a 13.1-mile, flat city centre course, through the historic streets of Peterborough, and is popular with runners eager to improve their personal best times.
I appreciate that there are many worthwhile causes to support and understand that individuals must choose those that they feel a personal connection with. If you, or any of your running club members, know of someone who is living with, or has lived with, the challenges of Parkinson’s, I hope that you will consider joining our team and helping us to make a difference to the lives of so many people affected by the condition, now and in the future.
People with Parkinson's rely on us….we’re relying on runners like you.
Thank you in advance for circulating this information.
Best wishes
Carol

Wednesday 6th August ~ 7pm
The Stowmarket Striders Running Club have an opportunity to run the new section of the A14 at Haughley (nr Stowmarket) before the road is opened for traffic at the beginning of September. The road is approximately 3.6km long, given a social run of about 4.5 miles in total.
Being the friendly and open club that we are, we would like to invite all local clubs and joggers/runners to join us in this social fun run. There are no prizes for the fastest run or recording your times / position – this is simply for social get together principally to enjoy running a new dual carriage way before it is opened up to traffic.
Where
Parking will be at the old picnic site just off the old A14 on the bends. To drive there, access is only available from the west bound carriage way staying in the left hand lane only. The turning is the first left exit after the Shell Garage. Follow the link for a map and the red arrow pin points the location http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=602230&Y=261640&A=Y&Z=4. The run starts at 7:00pm, so please arrive early.
Facilities
There are no facilities at this site. Therefore, please arrive ready to run.
Charity
In holding this event, the club, together with the contractors (Birse Civils Ltd) involved with building the new road, are raising some local publicity and raising a few pounds for charity. The club kindly asks each runner who joins us to donate £2 to charity that will be equally split between the ‘East Anglian Air Ambulance’ service and ‘The Monday Club’, a local based charity for people with severe learning difficulties. The Stowmarket Striders will collect your entry fee and distribute each and every penny collected equally to these charities.
So please join us for a social run on a brand new section of the A14 road before it opens to traffic. Please also pass this message around the members of your club as soon as you are able.
Look forward to seeing you all there.

Club Standards
Sarah Golding

Magna Carta Relay 2008
The Magna Carta Relay is part of a growing event which attracts cyclists, walkers and runners to Bury st Edmunds which this year was raising money for CLIC Sargent caring for children with cancer.
Starting from the Abbey Gardens ten teams took part in a relay consisting of teams of 6 each running legs of 1.8 miles. The good weather made for a terrific atmosphere of a true fun run. SGR Radio was present along with a number of stalls. Alongside the relay there was a steady procession of cyclists finishing there chosen rides of betwen 20 to 100 miles in the Abbey gardens.
This was a great success and every club member is invited to give a relay a go. Look out for further events from Dave Overman.
Pacer teams fared well and the results can be found here.

Brandon Forest Half Marathon
Message from Brandon Fern Hoppers.........
As you may be aware the 9th Brandon Forest Half Marathon takes place on Mon
26th May (the next Bank Holiday) at 10:30 am. Hosted by the Brandon Fern
Hoppers
(I know several of your club members have already entered but there are
still a few places available if anyone is interested.)
The reason I have emailed you is to ask for some help with the Marshalling
of this event
If any of the supporters coming to the event would like to volunteer they
would be most welcome.
The route is a cloverleaf shape of 3 loops each starting, finishing or
passing through Mayday Field so all Marshalling positions are within a mile
of the race HQ.
All Marshals will receive a goody bag of priceless stuff !! (no doubt)
As part of our agreement to use the forest we have to ensure that all points
where cycle routes cross our course are marshalled which means that as we
are a small club we are dependant on volunteers to help us stage this event.
So, if anyone is interested in supporting us please contact me in advance if
you can or come & see me on the day before 10:00 am (I'll be in the area of
a big sign saying "Marshals")
Many thanks in advance
Cheers
Trevor Rolph

Dave Overman our Race Director has suggested a no of events the club may wish to enter . As usual let Dave know on his e-mail david.overman@btinternet.com
The Magna Carta Relay is run at Abbey Gardens on the 8th of June. It is six runners over 1.8 miles.
I think this ought to be a fun event and those of you with younger members may wish to get them involved in a real club event and warm down with Ice Creams in the Gardens after the run.
Mutford Relays are to be held on the 13th of July in the Waveney Valley. This is a very popular event that we have always done well in. It is 5km legs which start and finish at the same place. Teams are made up of five runners but they are of varying ages and include male and female runners.

Again this is a great event to get involved in and it would be good to get some teams to compete.

Paul Goldman Training Sessions
I ventured down to the sports centre this morning at 9am to join Paul Goldman's training group. This was my first time running with this group and it was very enjoyable running with company. I think there were around 10 of us that set out to run out to Risby and Barrow.
The full session was a 15 miler but some of us did about 8 miles and returned to Bury from Risby. The pace was a good relaxed one at around 9 minute miling enabling a chat on the run.
If you are training for a marathon or just want some company then consider giving this a go on a Sunday. I shall certainly do this again.
If there are any other informal training groups that are open to club members to come along and join how about letting me know and I will mention on the training runs page.

Want to run London Marathon !!!
St Nicholas Hospice are trying to find a runner who are will run the London Marathon for them. Unfortunately a runner with a place has had to pull out BUT as they have to pay for the place they would therefore like to see if anyone would be willing to take the place and fundraise as well. Ideally they would like you to raise at least £1000 but this is open to negotiation. I would need a quick response from anyone with an interest in the next few days and I will put you in touch with the relevant contact at St Nicholas to discuss. |

Club Social Secretary !
You may have seen in the recent edition of the Pace there was a request for a volunteer to express interest in the position of Social Sceretary. As this position still remains vacant I am putting out another request for a member of the club to step forward and give this a go. This really is a position we lack at the moment and would help take the club forward if we can find someone willing to give this a go.
What are we looking for? Someone who is good at organisation and has plenty of ideas to spark interest in members in getting involved in social activities. The club committee has ideas for 1-2 events but we need your help.
Interested ???? Send me an e-mail

Caldecott Hall, Great Yarmouth January 16th
by Carl Marston
The men increased their lead at the top of the East Anglian Wednesday League after the fifth meeting, staged at Caldecott Hall by Great Yarmouth Road Runners.
Peter Barker won the race in style, and the team closed out their scorers inside the top 10. We are now in pole position to win the league, having missed out by just two points from University of East Anglia last season.
The ladies suffered from not having a third and final scorer. However, Pat Partridge was an excellent second overall, and Eloise Calver recorded her highest position in this league in seventh.
The next race is at Shouldham Warren (organised by RAF Marham) on Wednesday, February 13, followed a week later by our own meeting at Nowton Park. |

RAF Barnham East Anglian Wednesday League January 9th 2008
by Carl Marston
We strengthened our lead at the top of the men’s team section, following another good performance at the fourth meeting, staged over three fast laps of RAF Barnham Camp.
David Reed was bang in form, leading home the team in second spot. Our ladies also remain in a good position to win the team title, bolstered by Jemma Clarry’s strong showing in third spot. Full results here. |

Suffolk County Cross Country Championships Royal Hospital
School, Holbrook, on Sunday, January 6:
by Carl Marston
We managed to retain the Southgate Cup by again winning the senior
men's team award at the annual Suffolk County Cross Country
Championships, which were this season held at Royal Hospital School in
Holbrook.
The Pacers have dominated this section in recent years, and although
we only won by a narrow margin at the 2007 Championships in Hadleigh,
we had a much bigger advantage this year.
We packed our four scorers in the top 12 to win by a comfortable
margin from Ipswich Jaffa. And our ladies also ran well to finish
third behind Jaffa and Stowmarket.
It was certainly encouraging to field a full ladies' team, as well as
13 senior men, while we were also well represented amongst the
juniors, with pride of place going to the gold-medal winning under-13
girls team.
For the senior men, Peter Barker was fourth overall and the leading
veteran, as he led home a procession of Pacers. Steve Robinson started
quickly and held on for fifth position, while chairman David Reed was
not far behind in sixth. He was also the second veteran. Chris Cooke
closed out the team in 11th slot.
Christine Anthony, who is in training for the marathon, proved her
good fitness by leading home our ladies in 10th spot. Maureen McCarthy
(12th) and Pat Partridge (14th) also scored for the team.
Our under-13 girls were victorious due to the efforts of Rebecca
Laidlaw (seventh), Alice Maguire (eighth) and Jessica Gooderham
(ninth). Excellent packing!
And there was a good run from Sam Harrison, who was seventh in the
under-13 boys' age group. The Pacers were fourth team in this section,
with Jake McCarthy (13th) and Liam Brophy (16th) also in the team.
Liam Wigglesworth was 27th.
Likewise, we took third team in the under-17 women's category. Rachel
Cracknell, Chloe Jennings and Rebecca Guy were our scorers. Sherilyn
Rigby was 11th amongst the under-15 girls.
Some of our runners are now in line to be selected to represent
Suffolk at the annual Inter-Counties Championships, to be staged at
Nottingham.

Club Records
Report from Martin Barnes-Smith
Belated congratulations go to Angie Alstrachan (FV40) who broke the 20 minute barrier for 5K in May 2006, running 19.58 in Gloucester. and Peter Golding who, also in 2006, smashed the MV 50 Marathon record in a time of 2.41.19. Well done to you both. More recently in October last year Robert Price (MV65) ran the Wisbech 10mile in a time of 1.12.12. This I believe was Robert's first run in this age category. Matt Barnes-Smith (SnrM) running in the USA put his mark on the 5mile, 23.54, and 10k 30.21.The first record to tumble since I took over was the MV40 10k, by Peter Barker in Ely on New Year's Eve in the time of 33.26. Again well done to you all.
I look forward to entering more names throughout the year, so please keep submitting your times to me including a copy of the results or details of a web site so I can verify them. |

Ely10k New Years Eve Race 31st December 2008
A report from David Overman on the New Years Eve race at Ely :-
Matt Barnes Smith promised the organisers that he would beat the course record and was as good as his word.He won an exciting race by 4 seconds and beating the course record by 14 seconds and the club record by 30 seconds.
This is his first run as a St Edmunds Pacer for a long time (currently studying at Oklahoma State University) and it was good to see him running so well.In addition SEP also claimed first prize in the vet 40 and vet 45 with Peter Barker (in a new club record for V40) and Chris Cooke running well.
In addition Miranda Wheatley ran well in her come back run to claim 10th place in the Ladies closely followed by Thetford runner Trish Dennison in a new PB.
Other runners for SEP included great performances by Steve Robinson 12th, Julian Long 22nd Darren Barwick 69th, David Overman 226th, Dawn Marshall 289th and 53rd Ladies and Mike Chambers 379th 5th in MV65 category.
It was also good to see that Peter Foody is back running with his first outing in over a year. His time of 38.01 gave him 6th place in the MV40 category and it will not be long before he is back running for SEP.
These performances bode well for the coming year.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People
Is a charity that trains dogs to alert their deaf owners to sounds such as the alarm clock, telephone, doorbell or smoke alarm. Around 75% of dogs entering the scheme are selected from rescue centres or donated as unwanted pets. We receive no government or lottery funding and make no charge for the service. Each dog is provided with training and life-long aftercare and each partnership with support costing the charity over £5000 per dog.
In East Anglia today there are over 80 working partnerships as part of over 800 current placements with another 150 dogs being placed every year at a cost of over £5 million. But with over 650,000 people in the UK being potential recipients of hearing dogs, we have a way to go and need your help!
We rely entirely on the fundraising efforts of our supporters without whom we would be unable to continue offering our services. Luckily we have a team of people from across the country that supports us by taking part in running events and I am writing to ask if you will join them.
Around the UK and in East Anglia there are many races which you can enter as an own place runner or apply for a guaranteed charity place and the events are all listed on our website www.hearingdogs.org.uk. Here are just a few local dates for 2008 in addition to the Flora London Marathon and Great Runs:
□
January 27th – Lakenheath Charity 5 Mile Run & 2 mile Fun Run.
□
May 4th – 10k Bespak Great East Anglian Run, Kings Lynn.
□
October 12th - Great Eastern Run, Peterborough.
Attached is a form to register your interest in any further dates. Remember – you don’t have to raise sponsorship as own places runners but anyone pledging to raise £25 or more will receive a running vest, support kit and sponsor forms and if you need any further information, please contact me on the details below.
Why not make your New Years Resolution one that will help deaf people and unwanted dogs in the UK?
Kindest regards,
Chloe Parratt

Report from the Hereward Relay by Dave Overman your Road Race Manager
Thanks to all of the runners that took part in the Hereward Relay.
For those who of you that have not heard of it before it is a four person relay from Peterborough to Ely Cathedral following the old pilgrim trail called the Hereward Trail.
It is made up of four different lengths 6, 11, 10.5 and 10. Normally it finishes outside the Cathedral but this year the finish was changed to Ely Football ground.
Up until two weeks before the event this year we had enough runners to put in five teams but flu took hold of the club and we lost five runners then a couple of others picked up injuries which meant we put out three teams.
The men’s ‘A’ team was made up of Iain Milligan, Kevin Murphy, Paul White and David Reed. Ladies ‘A’ was comprised of Pat Partridge, Julia Jepson, Angie Alstrachan and Sarah Golding. The final team was made up of Darren Baker, Mike Troup, David Overman and Ashley Gimson.
Each leg was timed and prizes were given for the winners of each leg out of the 131 teams that took part, David Reed won the final leg overall and Kevin Murphy finished second in the second leg. Good runs from Iain and Paul gave us an overall position of 7th for the race, which was an excellent position considering the losses.
The men’s ‘B’ team ran well with good performances from Darren as he warmed up for the Norwich half, Mike with a very good time on the second leg and Ashley running the last leg in 7 minute miles, which shows that Ash is on the way back.
The ladies team ran extremely well, unfortunately Angie went over on her ankle just before the start of her leg and struggled to the finish with damaged ankle ligaments.
Next year we will try again and make sure that all members have flu jabs in September. Also
we need to start thinking about the round Norfolk relay again.
It is to be run on the 20th/21st of September 2008.
One thing we may look at is staying at Kings Lynn over the weekend. Stowmarket Striders set up a camp there this year and by all accounts it proved very successful.
If you can send your details to me for this event, both for running and staying over, we will try and get two teams this coming year.
To contact me directly I have set up a new email address as work is getting too hectic to see all of the emails. Therefore this is the best one to use. david.overman@btinternet.com

Sport Relief 2008
We have had an e-mail from Sport Relief 2008 who are recruiting athletics and running clubs to organise Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Miles around the UK.
Sport Relief 2008: Warming up nicely
Friday 14th – Sunday 16th March 2008 will see three days of entertainment, events and energy designed to challenge the entire nation. Sport Relief is back and one thing is already for certain: It’s going to be even bigger and better than before.
Your chance to be a part of the team
At the heart of the weekend will be the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile. Last time round over 200 of our Mile events were organised in local communities by people like you. This year we need your club to get involved too.
Organising a Mile event can be an incredible experience - helping to raise the profile of the club, whilst bringing the local community together to be part of a huge, national campaign. And if that wasn’t enough you will also be helping raise money to transform lives here in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries.
Join forces with Sport Relief
And if it all sounds a lot to take on then don’t worry we will be here for you every step of the way. As well as providing you with loads of event materials, posters and giving you your own section on our website we also look after all of the event registration so that you can concentrate on making your event as successful as possible.
To find out more about what is involved and to apply to be an organiser go to www.sportrelief.com or call me on the number below.

East Anglian Midweek Cross Country League Wattisham Airfield Wednesday, November 7.
Carl Marston reports:- The Pacers fielded an encouraging 11 runners at the second East Anglian Midweek Cross Country League.
The men had a narrow lead going into this second race, following the first event at RAF Barnham, and they were again very competitive, despite the absence of Peter Barker through ill health.
Chairman David Reed led for much of the race, which was mainly on hard road surfaces within the airfield, before finishing a fine second. Chris Cooke, showing no ill effects from his recent Amsterdam Marathon (2hrs 49mins), came through strongly to finish seventh.
Jemma Clarry was a superb second in the ladies’ race, and first junior, behind Stowmarket’s Tamara Jordan, while Pat Partridge, Angie Alstrachen, Eloise Calver and Caroline Hollands were all well-placed.
The team results have yet to be finalised. The third meeting is at UEA in Norwich on Wednesday, November 28 (2.30pm start from sports pavilion) |

Suffolk Winter League Report on Fritton Lake Race
Thanks to Carl for his latest report
The Pacers put in a terrific team performance in the second Suffolk Winter League meeting of the season at Fritton Lake, to such an extent that we even pipped Ipswich Harriers to win the team section on the day, by a margin of just 15 points!
We were bolstered by Peter Golding’s brief and welcome return from Iraq, plus Will Barnes-Smith putting in an appearance – he’s currently Army training in Aldershot. And our chairman David Reed crowned his first appearance in the league this year by leading home the team in fifth spot.
The ladies were as consistent as ever, with Pat Partridge, Julia Jepson and Sarah Golding the team scorers, well supported by Angie Alstrachen and Eloise Calver. We remain third overall behind the Harriers and Stowmarket Striders, but it was still a very good day for the club. The 5.8-mile course seemed to go on forever, and we didn’t see much of the lake.
The next meeting is at Broome, near Bungay, on Sunday, November 18 (11am start). See you there. |

There were 24 Pacers in the senior race, while the club was also well represented amongst the girls in the junior race. The Pacers are third in the team stakes, just one point ahead of fourth-placed Newmarket & Sudbury. Teams (combined): 1 Ipswich Harriers 1,329pts; 2 Stowmarket 1,185; 3 Pacers 1,123; 4 Sudbury & Newmarket 1,122; 5 Waveney Valley 1,079. Also: 12 Pacers “B” 735.

A message from our road manager David Overman.
They are up to 500 places already booked. If you are going to take part best to do it soon otherwise all places will be gone. For anyone that has not done it before it is good fun and a nice way to end the year. Flat course with a nasty hill at the end (last year they had a piper at the top of the hill to encourage you home).
So far there are only four Pacers running.

Round Norfolk Relay 15th/16th September 2007
Roy Miller Club Secretary has provided the following report:-
Round Norfolk Relay was held 15-16 Sep and the Pacers had a good showing. It was 193 miles from Kings Lynn all the way around Norfolk back to Kings Lynn. We finished in 12th place out 25 teams in the Open Class. There were a llot of very good teams with the winning team averageing 6:47 minute mileing. Of special mention is that Jo Tweed won her leg as first lady in a record breaking time. As a team, we finished in 24:17:01, only 5:15 minutes off our estimate. The closest to their estimate was a team off by 4 seconds. The results are now posted under road racing/results link, you can see we had lots of firsts in their categories. Stephen Williams covered six of the legs as bike support, which was vital for the safety of our runners. Mike Troup who ran our last leg showed his good form (Berlin Marathon soon) with a strong finish. We must also thank all our support people, without them it wouldn't happen. |

St Edmund Pacers are currently leading in the Suffolk Winter Cross County League, but we need your help !
We would like as many club members as possible to come and run, should we qualify for the National final in Nottingham. However you must complete at least two events in order to qualify.
The remaining events are at Nowton Park on 2nd January and Haughley Park on 13th February. Don't worry if you think you may not be fast enough - your contribution is really important wherever you finish by holding points from other teams. If you would be interested contact Chris Cooke or Trish Dennison for more details. |
